Starlink vs NBN in Victoria: which is right for your address?

    2026-02-086 min read

Starlink and NBN aren't competitors at every Victorian address — they win in different scenarios. Here's how to decide.

Where NBN wins - **NBN FTTP (fibre to the premises)**: gigabit speeds and stable latency. Almost always the right choice when available. - **NBN HFC**: 100-1000 Mbps, very stable. Strong choice in most Melbourne metro suburbs. - **NBN FTTC**: still good, 50-250 Mbps typical.

Where Starlink wins - **NBN Fixed Wireless**: capped, contended, often slower than advertised. Starlink usually beats it. - **NBN Sky Muster (satellite NBN)**: high latency, restrictive plans. Starlink is dramatically better. - **No NBN at all**: regional and rural Victorian addresses with only ADSL or no service. Starlink is transformative.

Cost trade-off Starlink has hardware and a higher monthly subscription; NBN has no hardware cost and lower monthly fees. For pricing, check Starlink and your preferred RSP directly — those numbers move regularly.

What we install We install Starlink dishes across West Gippsland, the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges and rural pockets in between. For NBN, you typically don't need an installer — the NBN crew handles it.

Hybrid setups On marginal addresses, we sometimes recommend Starlink as primary and NBN Fixed Wireless as backup, or vice-versa. A small router with dual-WAN failover handles the switching.
