Starlink installation in regional Victoria: complete 2026 guide

Starlink has changed internet for huge swathes of regional Victoria — Gippsland, the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges and rural pockets right across the state. But a self-installed Starlink dish on a tripod in the lawn rarely survives a Victorian winter. Here's what a proper professional install actually looks like.

Site survey first The Starlink dish needs an unobstructed view of the sky — roughly 100° wide cone overhead. Trees, sheds and roof-line shadow all break the link. We meter the proposed location with the Starlink app's obstruction tool before mounting anything.

Mounting options - **Roof mount**: cleanest cosmetic result, fully waterproof, hardware lifetime is decades. - **Pole mount**: best for properties with tall trees nearby — get the dish above the canopy. - **Eave mount**: a good middle-ground for suburban houses where roof access is awkward. - **Wall mount**: works for farm buildings and sheds.

Cable routing Starlink ships with a fixed-length cable. We route it through a properly weatherproofed wall penetration into the room with the router. Outdoor runs are clipped under eaves and protected from UV.

Power and router placement The Starlink router has built-in WiFi but limited range. For a typical Victorian rural property, we usually pair it with a mesh node or a separate access point. The router itself wants to live somewhere central — usually a study or hallway.

Real-world performance We see 100-300 Mbps down and 10-30 Mbps up at most regional Victorian addresses we've installed. Latency is 20-40 ms — perfectly fine for video calls and gaming.

When Starlink is overkill If you're in metro Melbourne and NBN fibre or HFC is available at a fair price, NBN usually wins. Starlink is the right answer when NBN is fixed-wireless, ADSL or unavailable.

Booking an install We service Gippsland, the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley and most of regional Victoria within an hour of Melbourne. Call 0497 098 109 or request a quote.
