From our job notes

Geelong: Mt Dandenong or Highton

Geelong gets the Melbourne networks two ways: VHF from Mt Dandenong, about 93 km away across Port Phillip, or UHF from the Highton repeater with horizontal polarisation. They need different antennas pointed in different directions. Many Geelong antennas are pointed at one while built for the other.

We meter both from your roof and fit an antenna built for the cleaner source. (Older advice that Geelong antennas point at a "Lovely Banks" TV transmitter is out of date — the local site is Highton.)

Geelong: across the bay or the local repeater?

Older antennas around Geelong were often installed for whichever site the neighbours used, and many have never been checked since. If your picture is unreliable, the first question is whether the antenna suits the site it is pointed at — a UHF antenna aimed across the bay at a VHF transmitter will never be stable.

Geelong signal facts

Main transmitter
Mt Dandenong
Distance & direction
93 km, bearing 68° (east-north-east)
Band & polarisation
VHF, horizontal
Channels
VHF 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12 (plus UHF 32 for C31)
Local repeater in reach
Highton repeater (Geelong): 4.3 km at 259° (west), UHF horizontal, 4 kW
What we usually fit
A long-range high-gain VHF/UHF combination antenna on a tall, guyed mast, with a masthead amplifier only if the meter calls for one — or, where the Highton repeater meters cleaner, a UHF antenna mounted horizontally and aimed at it

Distances and bearings are calculated from the centre of Geelong; your roof may differ by a few degrees. Repeaters are low-power and directional, so we always confirm with a meter on site.

The signal's route to Geelong

Draw a line from Geelong toward Mt Dandenong at 68° and it crosses Hampton, Bentleigh, Oakleigh South, Oakleigh East, Wantirna South and Boronia before reaching the transmitter 93 km away.

The shorter path to the Highton repeater (4.3 km at 259°) runs over Newtown.

Practical tip: stand where your antenna is and face east-north-east. If you can see a big tree, a new two-storey house or a hill within a few hundred metres, that is the first suspect.

Geelong installs we do most

Commercial premises around Geelong — cafés, clubs and offices — often need several TVs from one antenna. We design the distribution and choose the cleaner site for the location.

Geelong: quick answers

Why did my picture get worse after a new antenna went up?

Often because it was a different type, or pointed at the other site. We check both the antenna type and the aim.

Does raising the antenna always help?

Not always over water — reflections can cancel the signal at certain heights. We test different heights with a meter.

My antenna points the opposite way to my neighbour's — is one wrong?

Not necessarily. You may be on different sites. What matters is that the antenna type matches the site it points at.
