The Five Ways signal: distance and open country
On a Five Ways block the TV may be 40 metres or more from the antenna, with a shed or second dwelling further again. Every metre of cable loses signal, and cheap RG59 loses a lot. We use low-loss RG6, keep runs as short as the layout allows and add a distribution amplifier where several outlets share the signal.
Five Ways signal facts
- Main transmitter
- Mt Dandenong
- Distance & direction
- 37 km, bearing 4° (north)
- Band & polarisation
- VHF, horizontal
- Channels
- VHF 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12 (plus UHF 32 for C31)
- What we usually fit
- A mid-gain VHF/UHF combination antenna on a short mast above the roofline
Distances and bearings are calculated from the centre of Five Ways; your roof may differ by a few degrees. Repeaters are low-power and directional, so we always confirm with a meter on site.
The signal's route to Five Ways
Draw a line from Five Ways toward Mt Dandenong at 4° and it crosses Clyde, Berwick, Harkaway, Belgrave Heights, Tecoma, Upwey and Sassafras before reaching the transmitter 37 km away.
Practical tip: stand where your antenna is and face north. If you can see a big tree, a new two-storey house or a hill within a few hundred metres, that is the first suspect.
A Five Ways install, done properly
On larger Five Ways properties we sometimes install the antenna on a pole in the clear and run cable underground to the house. It costs more than a roof mount but solves stubborn reception problems.
Common Five Ways call-outs
- Long cable runs to outbuildings losing signal
- Antenna too small for the distance
- Mast too short to clear a rise or tree line

Five Ways: quick answers
Do I need a taller mast?
If a rise, tree line or building sits in the path, often yes. We test at different heights before recommending one.
Can you mount the antenna on a pole instead of the roof?
Yes — a pole mount in a clear spot with cable run to the house is a good option on larger blocks.
Why has my reception faded over the years?
Often a windbreak or tree line has grown into the path. Raising the antenna or moving it usually restores it.
