From our job notes

Mount Eliza homes and trees

Mount Eliza's large blocks and mature trees make for long cable runs and a signal path that changes with the seasons. Most homes point north toward Mt Dandenong on VHF; where gums have grown up across that path, raising the antenna on a taller mast usually brings the picture back.

We also see a lot of older multi-point systems here — four or five TVs fed through splitters added over the years. A properly balanced outlet layout with a distribution amplifier fixes the "one room never works" problem.

Why Mount Eliza reception varies house to house

Mount Eliza roofs are often among the trees, which also means gutters full of leaves and moss on the south side. Cable routed along a gutter sits wet for weeks. We route it clear of gutters and seal every entry point.

Distances and bearings are calculated from the centre of Mount Eliza; your roof may differ by a few degrees. Repeaters are low-power and directional, so we always confirm with a meter on site.

The signal's route to Mount Eliza

Draw a line from Mount Eliza toward Mt Dandenong at 30° and it crosses Frankston, Belvedere Park, Carrum Downs, Doveton, Lysterfield South and Tremont before reaching the transmitter 46 km away.

Practical tip: stand where your antenna is and face north-north-east. If you can see a big tree, a new two-storey house or a hill within a few hundred metres, that is the first suspect.

The right antenna for Mount Eliza

After a big storm in Mount Eliza we often find antennas that look fine from the ground but have turned on the mast. A quick meter check confirms it.

Common Mount Eliza call-outs

  • Antenna aimed at a transmitter the house cannot see
  • Wrong polarisation for the local repeater
  • Trees grown into a once-clear path

How Mount Eliza compares with its neighbours

  • Kunyung — 0.9 km to the west-north-west, about the same distance from Mt Dandenong. Its homes are more typical of established middle-ring suburb reception, so faults there tend to differ.
  • Mornington — 4.3 km to the south-south-west, 4.3 km further from Mt Dandenong. Its homes are more typical of coastal salt belt reception, so faults there tend to differ.
  • Frankston South — 5.7 km to the east, 3.3 km closer to Mt Dandenong.
  • Baxter — 6.0 km to the east, 2.6 km closer to Mt Dandenong. Its homes are more typical of rural acreage fringe reception, so faults there tend to differ.

Postcode 3930 also covers Kunyung.

Mount Eliza: quick answers

My neighbour gets a perfect picture — why don't I?

In hilly areas a few metres of elevation or a single tree can change everything. Your neighbour may be pointing at a different transmitter or have a clearer path. We meter from your roof specifically.

Is satellite TV better in the hills?

Only at addresses where no terrestrial signal can be received. We meter every option first, because terrestrial is free and usually works.

Can you run TV to my studio further down the slope?

Yes — from the main antenna, with low-loss cable and an amplifier if needed.
