From our job notes

Rosebud: the vertical repeater

Rosebud has its own low-power repeater on the council offices site, transmitting UHF 40–45 with vertical polarisation. It covers pockets the main transmitters can't, but because it is vertical, an antenna mounted horizontally receives very little of it. A surprising number of Rosebud dropouts are simply an antenna mounted the wrong way for the site it is pointed at.

Some Rosebud streets do better with the Arthurs Seat repeater (UHF, horizontal) or a bay-crossing path to Mt Dandenong (VHF). We meter all three before deciding, and we seal everything against salt.

What salt air does to antennas in Rosebud

Sand and grit blown onto Rosebud roofs wear away the coating on aluminium elements. Once the anodising is gone, corrosion speeds up. Antennas facing the prevailing wind fail first.

These figures come from ACMA site data and Rosebud's coordinates. Terrain and buildings change the picture street by street, which is why every job starts with a meter reading.

Rosebud to Mt Dandenong: the path

Signal from Mt Dandenong travels 69 km to reach Rosebud, passing over Patterson Lakes (37 km out), Bangholme (41 km out), Dandenong (48 km out), Lysterfield South (54 km out), Upper Ferntree Gully (61 km out), Tremont (63 km out) and The Basin (66 km out) on the way.

The path to the Rosebud repeater is only 2.8 km, bearing 234° (south-west).

The compass bearing (33°) is where we start. The final aim comes from the meter, which shows the strongest, cleanest lock on every channel.

Rosebud's signal options

For Rosebud installs we prefer antennas with sealed baluns, stainless fasteners and UV-stable cable. They cost slightly more but last far longer near the water.

Faults we fix most in Rosebud

  • Rusted mast clamps letting the antenna rotate in wind
  • Holiday homes with faults nobody reported for months
  • Old splitters corroded inside roof spaces near the water

  • Arthurs Seat — 3.1 km to the east, 2.0 km closer to Mt Dandenong. Its homes are more typical of foothills & escarpment shadow reception, so faults there tend to differ.

Questions from Rosebud customers

Can a corroded antenna be repaired?

If only the balun and first section of cable are affected, yes. If the elements are pitted or crumbling, a new antenna is better value — and you save $120 on a new install.

Do you service holiday homes in Rosebud?

Yes. Many holiday and rental homes go months between visits, so faults go unreported. We can meet a property manager on site and send photos of the fix.

How often should a coastal antenna be checked?

If you are close to the water, a quick check every few years catches corrosion before it fails.
