From our job notes
Safety Beach and the Arthurs Seat repeater
Safety Beach is the area the Arthurs Seat repeater is aimed at. It transmits UHF channels 40–45 with horizontal polarisation, so many homes here are better served by a UHF antenna pointed up the hill than by a VHF antenna aimed at Mt Dandenong. Others near the beach still get a usable bay-crossing path from Mt Dandenong. The only way to know is to meter both.
Coastal salt is the other factor: we fit sealed connectors and stainless hardware as standard on Safety Beach jobs.
Why coastal antennas fail early in Safety Beach
Sea breezes in Safety Beach also mean fatigue. Elements that vibrate in constant wind work loose at the boom. A slight rattle on a windy day is often the first sign an antenna is on the way out.
The numbers for Safety Beach
- Main transmitter
- Mt Dandenong
- Distance & direction
- 63 km, bearing 30° (north-north-east)
- Band & polarisation
- VHF, horizontal
- Channels
- VHF 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12 (plus UHF 32 for C31)
- Local repeater in reach
- Arthurs Seat repeater: 4.6 km at 220° (south-west), UHF horizontal, 230–400 W
- What we usually fit
- A high-gain VHF/UHF combination antenna on a mast that clears the ridge — or, where the Arthurs Seat repeater meters cleaner, a UHF antenna mounted horizontally and aimed at it
Calculated from Safety Beach's centre point using ACMA transmitter locations. On the day we confirm the best source with a calibrated meter at your roofline.
What lies between Safety Beach and Mt Dandenong
Between Safety Beach and Mt Dandenong lie Mount Martha, Kunyung, Pines Forest, Seaford, Doveton, Upper Ferntree Gully and Ferny Creek. Any tall building, ridge or tree line along that 63 km line affects what your antenna receives.
The shorter path to the Arthurs Seat repeater (4.6 km at 220°) runs over Dromana and Arthurs Seat.
When we aim a Safety Beach antenna we start at 30° and then peak it on the meter, because reflections can make the best direction a few degrees off the map bearing.
Choosing where to point in Safety Beach
Safety Beach has two realistic signal sources. Mt Dandenong is 63 km away at 30° (north-north-east), broadcasting VHF with horizontal polarisation. The Arthurs Seat repeater is 4.6 km away at 220° (south-west) on UHF with horizontal polarisation. They need differently built and differently mounted antennas, so we meter both from your roof before deciding.
What usually goes wrong in Safety Beach
- Corroded balun terminals and white powder on the elements
- Storm-bent elements on exposed roofs
- Holiday homes with faults nobody reported for months

Safety Beach antenna questions
How long does an antenna last near the water in Safety Beach?
It depends on exposure and hardware. A cheap antenna with unsealed connectors can fail within a few years of salt air; an Australian-made antenna with sealed joins and stainless fittings lasts much longer. We fit the latter and back new antennas with a 25-year warranty.
Which transmitter should a Safety Beach antenna use?
There are two options: Mt Dandenong (63 km, VHF, horizontal) and the Arthurs Seat repeater (4.6 km, UHF, horizontal). The better one varies street by street, so we meter both before choosing.
Can a corroded antenna be repaired?
If only the balun and first section of cable are affected, yes. If the elements are pitted or crumbling, a new antenna is better value — and you save $120 on a new install.
